I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together

I truly believe that there is a part of every author, in every character they write. That seems true as for how I’ve built mine. Ultimately, I think we cannot create a being without creating ourselves. Physically or mentally. It’s not because we are that egotistical, though it’s possible, but it’s ourselves who we know. Self is the only person each of us knows to the core, although, we will not admit that to ourselves. We bury who we are at our depths, to the world. We do this so much so, we spend countless hours and dollars in therapy and spirituality retreats. We dive into philosophy, even if it’s only presented by one person that we ‘resonate with’. We don’t trust those other characteristics we hold in our being, so we use them to create others.

We create ourselves with the superpowers we keep in our heads. Some, we actually have within ourselves, others we only have in our daydreams. Some are nightmare powers, both good and evil. Some may not exist at all in the forefront but in the deep crevices of our brains. Perhaps they are past lives coming out to live once again on our pages. “Who do you want to be today? Who do you want to be?” The interesting things we see in others are added in as icing on the cake.

‘This character was built with parts I took from four different people in my life. I just mushed some of their traits together.’ Hmmmm Really? Perhaps, I can say that about a few. There’s still that bit of me in them, however, as it is how I see them. I have those traits inside me too. It is how I recognize them in others. There are times when you almost have to say that type of bullshit out of politeness. You don’t want the person you have modeled ‘that character’ after, to know you think he’s a jerk.

I have thought about this a lot while I’ve been writing The Domes. I only scratched the surface of my characters inside of Book One. You know that Mac is a bit daft, the pretty boy that leads you through the introduction into this deep state group. You know that Spec has a complicated relationship with humankind, but is a strong leader with purpose. SB: I always have to look up that word to make sure I have not offended any porpoises.

In Harvesters the quirks of the F&G members were mentioned in passing. In The Domes and future books, those quirks will be expanded on, continuing this path throughout the entire crew as we move forward. As far as that goes, Domes has been easy in some ways. I know ‘the four’. I know them well. It’s their story after all. They are the ones who remain. They are the ones who were created, instilled with this task, and have lived through history to get to the Domes. They are the survivors. Are they me? Am I them? Have we merged? It’s hard to say.

The Domes is now in the final stages of proofing/editing. I hope that my schedule will still stay the same. Even though I know I’m pushing myself. Formatting over Thanksgiving, releasing around early December. We’ll see. It seems so close. Plus, there is book three started and NANOWRIMO is starting – yes… I need to push myself more. What is wrong with me? Here is my page for progress updates.

I guess with a total of six books, I have a feeling that there’s not enough time. My characters have a story, and it needs to be free.

No matter how a character comes to life, they are the author’s offspring. Genetically part of the author’s blood, sweat, and tears. Just for the record: Yuri was not created after one person; he was built from parts of about four people in my past.
